| Liebe Segelfreunde, |
|

| Third 505 World Championship For Hunger/Jess |
 |
Final race in strong sunny Southwesterly. Martin/Falsone second.
Warnemünde, Germany. The final race had to bring the decision in the CSC 505 Worlds. Wolfgang HUNGER and Holger JESS (GER) went into the race with a nine-point lead over Mike MARTIN/Jesse FALSONE . Martin played the left side and led the fleet to the top mark. Serving as pathfinder boat, Hunger was forced to the right side at the start. After being released from pathfinder duties, Hunger tacked and went over to the left, out ot the waves and into less adverse current. At the windward mark, they found themselves about 15 places behind Martin. At that point, Martin/Falsone seemed to come out as World Champions.
After two windy races on the day before, the whole top of the fleet had their speed tuned up to the conditions perfectly. Therefore, the heaviest teams worked their way forward through the fleet. BEECKMAN/NELSON (USA) won the race followed by HOLT/FULCHER (GBR) and HAGEN/WOELFEL (USA). Martin kept up with the big guys and finished fourth, but he could not prevent Hunger from moving up to ninth place. Hunger/Jess, World Champions of 2001 and 2003, won the Championship by six points. Dietrich Scheder-Bieschin had a glamorous comeback after a couple of years out of the boat and finished third with Reiner Görge on the wire (both GER).
A Junior World Championship was scored among the competitors under 25. Morten BOGACKI/Christian LINDEMANN (GER, 12th overall) claimed the title by only one point over Jens FINDEL/Johannes TELLEN (GER, 14th overall). The mixed trophy went to Helen FISCHER/Robert ROTHE (GER, 37th overall) and the all-female title to Melanie OESTERGAARD/Angela STENGER (GER, 62nd overall)
The high level of competition in the 505 is indicated by the results of two high profiled campaigns by well known champions from bigger boats. Hasso PLATTNER launched a smaller "Morning Glory" this time, finishing 46th with expert crew Peter ALARIE. Phillippe KAHN teamed up with 29er World Champion Euan McNICOL and came in 64th while his Team Pegasus tuning partners Mark IVEY/Shane ILLIDGE finished eighth. No one involved appeared to be too unhappy with the results, as even the pros were completely amazed by the sheer joy of racing five-ohs in big breezes on open water.
At the prize giving ceremony, the competitors from twelve nations were still thrilled by the adrenaline boost of the final days. The party went on all night; as cheers were brought out to a great sailing venue, perfect organization onshore and offshore, and a healthy 505 class that might well live for another 50 years.

Three boats gain on Hunger/Jess in races 7 and 8
In the 7th and 8th race of the the CSC 505 Worlds in Warnemünde, the leaders Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess (GER) lost nine points of their 20 point lead. In a puffy fresh to strong Southwesterly, Mike Martin/Jesse Falsone jumped from nine to two in the scoreboard with a first and a third place. Dietrich Scheder-Bieschin/Rainer Görge displayed the most consistent performance throughout the wind range. With two fifth places today, they moved up to third overall.
In the second race of the day, the wind increased to about 28 knots. 138 of 175 competitors finished the 10,5 mile long race within the 30 minute time limit after the first boat. Two more boats came in a little later after recovering from capsizes. This indicates the high standard even of the back fleet. The average speed around the course was 7,5 knots.
More strong breezes are forecast for tomorrow. Since Hunger/Jess had boat speed difficulties in these conditions today, the three boats behind them still have a chance to win the championship in the ninth and final race. Due to finishing tenth in race no. 8, Hunger/Jess will be the pathfinder boat at the gate start tomorrow. This can be a disadvantage if the left side of the beat is favored.
Top Ten After Eight Races (Two discards, protests pending)

| Hunger/Jess expand lead at 505 Worlds |
 | Hot contestants make big mistakes in races 5 and 6
Two-time World Champions Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess (GER) made a big step towards their third title in the CSC 505 Worlds in Warnemünde today. In medium Northwesterly winds, they hit two bullets while some of their fiercest competitors made their biggest mistakes. Kellner/Stammerjohann (GER) and Martin/Falsone (USA) lost their chances for the title today with a 50th and a 31st place in the 5th race. Ivey/Illidge (USA) defended their second place with two more top ten finishes. Saugmann/Ramsbaek kept on gaining with a fourth and a second place. Both 20 points behind the leader, these two teams hang in there, waiting for Hunger/Jess to make another mistake. Two races are scheduled for Thursday, the last race is to be held on Friday.

| Hunger/Jess lead 505 Worlds |

Four races completed in sea breezes from 5 to 25 knots
Four Races have been sailed in the CSC 505 Worlds at Warnemünde in Northerly thermal winds. After light wind on the weekend, the sea breeze increased to 20-25 knots on Monday afternoon. With a record-breaking fleet size of 175 boats, the length of the gate start line causes an enormous leverage. Starting on the favored side of the line has never been more important. In every race, a couple of world class sailors found themselves at the weather mark with more than 100 boats in front of them after picking the wrong side of the first beat.
In the large and strong fleet, sailors are getting used to come out in radically different positions, depending on a good or bad first beat. Germans Böhm/Roos have made the most exciting jump from place 106 in the first race to third in the second heat.
Two time world champions Wolfgang Hunger /Holger Jess (GER) also experienced a bad first race with a 24th place, but recovered during the next two days with an immaculate 4, 3, 1 series. The two best teams from the Preworlds, Mark Ivey/ Shane Illidge (USA) and Christian Kellner/Klaus Stammerjohann follow on the scoreboard. Hunger’s nine-point lead over Ivey looks quite comfortable, but since mistakes tend to be disastrous in this regatta, the first ten boats still have a shot on the title.

One race sailed in light thermal breeze
The CSC 505 World Championships were officially opened in Rostock Warnemünde on Friday night. Today, two races were scheduled. After an hour of waiting in the race area, at 12.00h a light Northerly sea breeze filled in and the first race got underway. The 505 class has long favored the gate start method for fair starting in large fleets. However, this time a lot of sailors were concerned if a gate start would work with 170 boats in light air. It has been argued that the windward back spill of the fleet queuing for the start would slow down the port tack pathfinder boat, putting a disadvantage on the right side of the start. Pathfinders Ethan BIXBY/Erik BOOTHE (USA) proved all theories wrong by passing the first weather mark in the top twenties.
Watching the clouds filling in, Principal Race Officer Bernd-Leopold Käther assumed they would stall the thermal and opted to shorten the course. Right after the finish, the sea breeze died and the boats were sent to shore after an abandoned attempt to start another race. Michael RÖSSLER and Holger NEUHAUS (GER) won the race. Second Place finishers Dietrich SCHEDER-BESCHIN and Reiner GÖRGE (GER) have been disqualified for pumping. They filed for redress, claiming they have been confused with another boat. The redress is still pending Per LARSEN and Hendrik ANDRESEN (DEN) round out the top three. Volker NIEDIEK and Stefan HEISING from Germany move up to three if the DSQ for Scheder/Görge is confirmed. A record-breaking 167 boats finished the race.
Two races are scheduled for Sunday. On Sunday night, the sailors will celebrate the 50th anniversary World Championship with a gala event, the HSH Nordbank night. Australian America's cup legend Sir James Hardy, who launched his sailing career by winning the 505 World Championships in 1966, will be attending the event.
Preliminary Standings After 1 Race (Protests pending) 1. Rössler/Neuhaus GER 2. Larsen/Andresen DEN 3. Niediek/Heising GER 4. Stengel/Feller GER 5. Bogacki/Lindemann GER 6. Ivey/Illidge USA 7. Hamlin/Lewis USA 8. Filimonow/Stöckmann GER 9. Lehmann/Schöler GER 10. Hermann/Kleiner GER

| PreWorlds finished in perfect conditions |
|
Most of the competitors in the 50th Anniversary 505 World Championship have arrived in Rostock-Warnemünde on the Baltic seaboard. The first races will be sailed on Saturday, Aug 20. Four practice races were held Wednesday and Thursday. 114 boats from eleven nations competed in at least one practice race, getting in touch with local conditions and testing late equipmnet changes..The practice races constitute a seperate "PreWorlds" series that will affect national rankings.
The shore team of Warnemünder Segelclub and the race committee, helmed by Bernd Leopold Käther (Joersfelder Segelclub) also used the PreWorlds to get in shape. On Wednesday, the fluky northwesterly favored lighter teams and light air experts. On Thursday, bright sunshine generated a nice 15 knot northeasterly thermal breeze. Christian Kellner and Klaus Stammerjohann (WSCW) dominated the event with two second places and a third. The US team showed a strong performance with bullets for Hamlin/Lewis and Martin/Falsone and an overall second place for Ivey/Illidge.
